The trams are intended primarily for operation on the new university campus tram line.
Skoda Transportation is finishing up the assembly of the first new tram for Brno City Transport Company (DPMB) and released its first pictures. The tram is called Skoda ForCity Smart 34 and should gradually replace the aging KT8D5 trams from the 1980s and 1990s.
Skoda Transportation signed the delivery contract for the bidirectional trams with DPMB last February. The framework contract for 40 vehicles is the largest contract for trams in the Czech Republic in the last 10 years. The first five trams should be delivered this year. DPMB intends to use the option for another 35 trams until 2026; it will order the vehicles gradually according to its financial capabilities. The contract is worth up to CZK 2.4 billion.
