Czech Railways, the Liberec Region, the Statutory City of Liberec and TMR Jested signed a memorandum of cooperation on the renewal of the cable car to Jested today.
The aim is to prepare the best, most appropriate and most effective model of cooperation in order to restore and operate the cable car to Ještěd. The memorandum states a timetable of the cable car renewal and the responsibilities of the individual participants.
The agreement was signed today at the Liberec city hall. The cable car belongs to Czech Railways, it is located within the territory of Liberec, and Jested is one of the main symbols of the Liberec Region. TMR Jested is the lessor of the premises designed especially for winter sports. The cable car has been out of operation since October 31 2021 when a tragic accident occurred, killing a Czech Railways conductor.
Three different restoration options
There are three restoration options; the first is to repair the original cable car supplemented by new safety features. The second option is the construction of a new cable car in its original track. The third option, with the greatest benefit to residents and tourists, is the construction of a new cable car with an extended route to the tram station in Liberec-Horni Hanychov. Possible technical solutions include, in addition to the existing shuttle system with two large cabins, the circulating system with a larger number of smaller cabins. The reconstruction is estimated at 3–4 years with 4–5 years for the construction of a new cable car.
The second oldest Czech cable car from Liberec-Horni Hanychov to Jested was put into operation on June 27, 1933. It was supplied by the Chrudim company Frantisek Wiesner which became Transporta Chrudim after expropriation in 1945. Between 1971 and 1975, Transporta Chrudim carried out an extensive reconstruction of the cable car. The current cable car has a length of almost 1,200 meters, an elevation of 400 meters, an average gradient of 36% and a maximum gradient of 56%. It carried around 250 thousand passengers a year.
