České dráhy (Czech Railways, CD)  employees now know the name of their new boss. Michal Krapinec (35), who has headed the subsidiary CD Telematika since last September, will become Chairman of the Board of Directors and CEO.

The winner of the competition was presented today by Minister of Transport Martin Kupka and Chairman of the Supervisory Board Miroslav Zamecnik. Krapinec will succeed Ivan Bednarik, who resigned at the end of February, and take up his new duties on April 4, 2022.

A lawyer by trade, Krapinec has been with the Czech Railways group since 2012, when he started as secretary to the management of CD Logistics. He was also, among others, director of the office for economics and informatics of CD Cargo and a member of the supervisory board of CD Informacni systemy. In mid-2020 he became member of the board of directors of CD Telematika, and last September its chairman.

The Czech Railways managerial positions tend to not be long term, with five people having held the CEO position in the last five years. Bednarik’s resignation caught minister Kupka unawares with no new name up his sleeve. A number of people turned down his offer, among them former Czech Railways CFO and head of Citibank Michal Nebesky.

Eleven people applied for the top position including two who had already been on the board of Czech Railways. Miroslav Kupec was Chairman of the Board, Frantisek Bures was a Member of the Board and later head of the Railway Research Institute.
