Newag wins tender for new locomotives for PKP Intercity

Newag won over Pesa thanks to cheaper service.
Polish rolling stock manufacturer Newag will supply twenty new 160 km/h single-system locomotives to Polish state carrier PKP Intercity. The value of the contract is PLN 524.6 million, including five years of service. Newag’s competitor PESA Bydgoszcz offered PLN 561 million.
The locomotives, probably EU160 Griffin, will be used for domestic traffic. They will be equipped with ETCS Level 1 and Level 2 signaling. In the tender, PESA offered a slightly lower purchase price but was more expensive in terms of service. The locomotives will cost PKP Intercity more than originally estimated.
For PKP Intercity, this is another step in the modernization of its fleet. “This will allow better use of the new and modernized cars, ensure smoother operations and adherence to the timetable,” said Jarosław Oniszczuk, member of the PKP Intercity board of directors. For Newag, this is another tender for PKP Intercity after winning a tender for ten multi-system machines last year.
