Line 196 from České Budějovice to the border is obsolete.

Správa železnic and the Austrian Federal Railways (ÖBB) are preparing a joint feasibility study for the improvement of the line from České Budějovice to Linz, said the rail infrastructure manager CEO Jiří Svoboda.

At the moment there are no specific solutions, he added, but an increase in speed is the objective. If the economic assessment is positive, the project will become part of the Bahn 2040 agenda.

This year after the completion of extensive work on Corridor 4 between Sudoměřice and Soběslav, where speeds of more than 160 km/h will be possible, it became clear that line 196 from České Budějovice to Horní Dvořiště (and on to Linz) is obsolete. Trains here run on a winding single track (max. 100 km/h). The line was electrified at the turn of the century but remained in its original track.
